Using other senses
So for my first post, I want to discuss what I have gathered from this class thus far. The book
we have been reading has been opening my eyes to things I never gave much thought about in
the past. For instance, there have been a few times I have sat quietly and shut my eyes with an
intention to fully hear my surroundings. After learning how seeing enables someone to notice
half of what is happening around them and hearing gives someone a greater ability to be aware
of their surroundings, I have much intrigued to test this out on my own.
Honestly, it makes so much sense. Our eyes allow us to see what is in front of us with a little
bit of sight to the right and left of us. But, do we just depend on turning our heads everytime we
want to observe something we cannot directly see? It is what we, non-impaired people, are
accustomed to. I could not imagine what life would be like if I lost my sight, but the people we
have been reading about have advantages I couldn't even fathom.
I recently started watching a show in which I can barely understand their foreign accent at
times. Due to this, I often watch it with the subtitles on. However, I do have a cataract in my left
eye that I was born with, and without my glasses, I can't read out of that eye whatsoever. So my
puppy decided to destroy my prescription glasses and it has made trying to understand this
show quite challenging. Taking this class during this time has encouraged me to try to pay
attention to listening and less relying on seeing. I am looking forward to all I can learn within
these 6 weeks!
